Hulu Plus is an online media streaming service, which gives you access to loads of media content which includes, latest TV shows, classic movies, documentaries and many more. The company started in 2007, as a free online media streaming platform, a joint venture of AOL, Comcast, Facebook, MSN, Myspace, and Yahoo.
The years 2009 and 2011 were the tipping points for the company, when big media production giants, The Walt Disney Company along with Fox Broadcasting company, CW and BBC joined hands with Hulu. The company initially started its service in United States of America only, and has been able to expand its service only in Japan and that too in in the previous year(2015). Now Hulu is a billion dollar company, having over 9 million!! paying(Hulu Plus) subscribers.
Enough with the history and stats, now lets get started with our review!!
HULU PLUS OR HULU | HULUPLUS PRICE
First of all, for those who are still confused between Hulu and Hulu Plus, guys Hulu is a free service provided by the company in which you can stream all the content on their site for free. The company was started on the basis of this scheme only, and the idea behind this was to earn money from the advertisements. Hulu free service is also available right now, so if you are new to this online streaming fashion you can try it.
On the other hand Hulu Plus is a paid service, in which the subscribers have to pay a nominal amount, which is $7.99 per month (standard pack), to get the access of streaming its premium catalog with limited commercials.
There is another pack the premium pack which costs $11.99 per month, the content of both the standard and premium packs is same and the only difference is that, as the premium subscriber you can watch the content without any disturbance of advertisement (no commercials).
One more worth noticing thing is that, the free service provided by the streaming giant does not have many of the TV shows and movies which are available on Huluplus.
Also the episodes of the ongoing shows on Huluplus are available, a day after they are aired on their respective broadcasting channels, while in free service, it can take a week. The advertisements, as i mentioned are also pretty much annoying in the free service.
The free service of Hulu is stopped by the company and you’ll only get a $8-12 /month premium service on Hulu’s platform. But the good part is, Yahoo bought the complete streaming rights from Hulu and started their own service Yahoo view. So you can simply watch all your content on Yahoo instead of Hulu.
HULU PLUS OR CABLE ?
There are both pros and cons of the online streaming services over cable networks. The main reason why chord cutting is in fashion these days is because of its price. The prices offered by these online streaming services are so much cheaper than those offered by cable operators, as the average cost of a cable subscription in USA is around $60-80 per month (basic plans).
Also there are no contractual restrictions, as most of the cable services bound their consumers in 6 months or 12 months contracts. In Hulu plus you can pause your subscription, whenever you want and again get started, without spending an extra penny.
On the other side, with Huluplus you need a high speed internet connection whenever you want to watch something. You also cannot access many of the live content (basically awards, events news and sports) which is available on cable. It is pretty difficult for me to decide the best for you, as it depends too much on your preferences.
Many of the TV lovers are confused these days on their choice, between cable and the online streaming portals. That’s the reason why i have dedicated a detailed article on this “CABLE VS ONLINE STREAMING SERVICES” and i truly hope that, this will help you to select the best option for yourself.
Hulu’s ties with the big media production giants like ABC, NBC and Fox Entertainment, has made its TV shows catalog exceptional. Presently you can stream more than 1500 hundred titles, most of which are recent or airing on on the networks i discussed earlier. Some of the top shows available on Huluplus right now are The Modern Family, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Vikings, Doctor Who and many more big names. The channel list of Hulu Plus is really amazing and has the ability t draw a lot of cable customers.
The TV Shows catalog of Hulu Plus is invincible but when it comes to Movies, huluplus is not the number 1 choice. The movies catalog of Hulu Plus is quite weak as compared to other services in the market, but still has few good titles like Boyhood, 13 Assassins, and old classics like The Bicycle Thief, Annie Hall etc.
HULU PLUS ORIGINALS
Along with the above content, Hulu Plus is also creating its own TV shows (Hulu originals). As the subscribers are increasing, the budget and the motivation to make own shows is also rising. Some of the original titles of Hulu Plus are The Mindy Project, The Awesomes etc.
COMPETITION FOR HULU PLUS
The service provided by both Hulu and Hulu Plus are exceptional, but still Hulu Plus is facing a very tough competitions, from many of the other streaming giants, especially Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Videos, iTunes.
All the names above have some advantages over others, like Netflix has enormous movies and TV shoes catalog but the movies titles are pretty old, Hulu Plus has recent TV shows but its movie catalog is a little weak as compared to others. On the other hand services like Amazon Prime and iTunes have some quality content, but are a bit expensive.
For further details you can also read my article on comparison between Amazon Instant Videos, Huluplus, Netflix and iTunes, which will cover all the other details in a broader manner.
DEVICES SUPPORTING HULU PLUS
Out of the two ways of streaming Hulu Plus, the first one is to stream online using browsers on your laptops, mobiles, tablets etc. Secondly, you can stream it with the devices from various manufacturers like Roku, Google, Amazon and Apple, plus game consoles from Microsoft and Sony etc.
Chromecast by google is the cheapest device in the list, but requires a mobile device or a computer to function. Gaming consoles like Xbox 360 and Playstation also support Hulu Plus. The list of Hulu Plus supporting devices is quite big and almost includes all the mainstream devices used now a days.
One thing you should keep in mind that the devices that support Hulu (the free service) may not support the premium or paid version Hulu Plus.
