Hello guys, in this article we are going to review and compare a newly released service Directv NOW with the long lime first choice of Cord Cutters “Hulu” (DirecTV NOW vs Hulu). So basically, the four aspects which we are going to cover in this article are Channels Catalog, Content, Plans (cost), and Performance. But before we start let’s take a minute to understand what DirecTV NOW is and what does it offers.
So basically, the four aspects which we are going to cover in this article are Channels Catalog, Content, Plans (cost), and Performance. But before we start let’s take a minute to understand what DirecTV NOW is and what does it offers.
What is DirecTV NOW?
DirecTV NOW is online LIVE TV streaming service, which lets you stream live TV channels on your devices, just as Cable TV, but with the internet. The service is owned by telecom giant AT&T, the biggest pay-TV company in the US.
You can simply relate DirecTV NOW to few other live TV streaming services like PS Vue and Sling TV. But the reason why we are comparing it with Hulu is because, as soon as it was launched it became a straight competitor of Hulu because of its vast channels list and the huge popularity of Hulu among Cord Cutters.
The another reason is that Hulu is going to add live TV streaming to its platform most probably in January 2017, which will be in the same price segment as DirecTV NOW.
Well until Hulu unveil its live service, let’s see where Hulu stands when compared to its new rival.
DirecTV NOW vs Hulu
1. Channels Catalog
Well, it’s no point in writing the complete channels list(around 120 channel) of DirecTV now as it is available on their official website, any for Hulu complete channel list you can visit one of my another article. So what we’ll do here is we’ll point out some of the major networks which are available on one service and not the other.
DirecTV NOW :- Starz, BBC World News, ESPN, NBA TV, Sprout, AMC, Travel Channel, Velocity, MLB Network, Hallmark, Cooking Channel.
Hulu : NFL Network, Esquire Network, Ion.
So, as you can see DirecTV NOW is evidently a winner of this section, as it offers around 100 channels, (All the major networks are common in both the services and you can review the entire channels lists with the help of links given above).
Hulu is already a well, established service with a lot of great content, on the other hand, DirecTV NOW offers live TV and has an upper hand, But when it comes to On-Demand shows DirecTV NOW sucks.
DirecTV now has a very small amount of on-demand content and that too on selected channels. Although they have promised the users to upgrade their library soon, but still it won’t be able to compete with Hulu in this section as Hulu has an On-Demand kind of model.
The another disappointment with the DirecTV NOW service is that they are not offering the much-needed DVR feature, which indeed is a must have feature.
3. Plans and Packs
DirecTV NOW subscription comes with 4 plans :-
- $35/month for 60+ channels
- $50/month for 80+ channels
- $65/month for 100+ channels
- $80/month for 120+ channels
Well, choosing an 80 dollar plan makes less sense as it is almost same as paying for cable, but the other plans are first 2 plans are quite decent in terms of price selection. DirecTV also has a scheme going on as shown in the image below, which is available for a limited period of time.
Hulu, on the other hand, comes with 2 plans $8 a month and $12 a month and both of these plans have all the networks offed by Hulu.
Well until now DirecTV NOW looks promising, the streams are flawless. AT&T have maintained amazing 1080p streams with most of the major channels in the list.
In my experience until now I have not experienced any glitches or hiccups which are pretty common in live streaming and usually occur with Sling and PS Vue.
Now Hulu as compared to DirecTV now lacks in Interface design, and one of the major problems with Hulu is the navigation menu which makes really difficult to use when you don’t know what to watch. But this might not be a problem for those who watch selected shows as they can use the search option.
So, guys, this was my take on DirecTV NOW vs Hulu. Well as DirecTV NOW is a new service, it’s not completely fair to judge it at the moment, but the service looks promising and the opening discount offer is icing on the cake.
So, in my opinion, you should try it at least for one week as its free for the first one(do need your card details). At last here are few highlights of DirecTV NOW in a brief to help you decide, whether you want it or not.
- Up to 120 channels, with limited ON-demand content.
- The initial offer of $35 a month for $65 plan, which will retail until further notice by AT&T.
- NO DVR
- Streams available in 2 devices simultaneously.
- Nice interface and video quality.
So I hope I have cleared all your doubts regarding DirecTV NOW. If you have any other question related to the article or any other cord cutting related issue, do leave a comment. I do answer all of your comments.
